China Cottage, Bothwell, Hamilton, Glasgow

12th of June 2016:

China Cottage is a place that M has been speaking about for a while, she went a few years ago with her boyfriend and have let me know about this place and how great it is. She advised that it is an all you can eat restaurant but with a twist, the twist is, that it is not a buffet, you order as much as you want and it gets brought to you fresh. LIKE WHAT?! I love this idea and the person who created this idea. If youre from Glasgow area or know it well, you will understand that i dont think there is a place in this area that does this with Chinese food. I was flabargasted at this.

So, M, my sister, is going away to abroad to work for a month tomorrow, so this was our goodbye meal for a few weeks (emotional time for me as we are the closest ever). So we ventured out to the other side of Glasgow in Bothwell to go to this Chinese. When we got there, to be honest, it isnt the nicest looking place, it does just look like a little Chinese takeaway. Inside though, it is very nice, the restaurant is cute. We got seated (I like these people) and got given the menus. So, after the excitement we realised that it was a Sunday menu we had and that the all you can eat started at 5pm and it was around 2/3pm. Ragin' wisnae the word.

We decided on Chicken noodle soup for starter and Pancake Rolls. For mains we got Chicken Curry with boiled rice and a special chow mein. It was fabulous.

I got the chicken curry which came like this above. It was very, very tasty. Spicy and a decent size portion which I was of course happy about. The curry isn't the best I've had obviously but on that note not the worst defiantly. Delicious and filled a hole. Perfect late lunch/early dinner.

M got the special chow mein, she enjoyed this a lot. The portion size was great she feels, the noodles were thin and fresh, as was the chicken, pork, mushrooms and prawns. The BBQ sauce was lovely. This was amazing, no bad words about it at all. Beautiful place, beautiful food and beautiful friendly people.

5th of June 2016:

On the first Sunday of every month, we (me and M) take our 3 younger siblings out for a day and have a sibling day- cause we are cute like that- it was sunny for once and we decided to go to Loch Lomond for the day. While driving for what seemed like forever we finally found a parking space, while walking along hungrily looking for some civilisation/food we saw this hotel/bar/pub and happily continued towards the lovely looking pub. The inside of the place looked great, friendly and homely. As always, confused whether to sit down or wait to be seated we figured out that you are to sit down and get a menu. We seen the menu which has a lot to offer, it was great. Me and M got fish and chips and peas, our brother got a cheese pizza, our youngest sister got a cheese burger and chips and our other sister for chicken kiev with chips aswell. All the food looked great to be fair.

Our brother got, as stated above, a cheese pizza. He advised this was very good and he enjoyed it a lot. He isn't a big talker and a bit shy (even with us) but he expressed his enjoyment with this through demolishing this full pizza within about 7 minutes. He obviously enjoyed it a lot.

Our youngest sister got the burger and chips and the other one got the chicken. They both finished all of it (except the salad obviously) and enjoyed it as well. They even said thank you after it!! That shows how much they liked it as they are in the teenage stage that they don't say please, thank you, etc, etc - ungrateful wee SH*TS. lol, but they did think the food was great and the place was lovely.

So, here it is, the best bit, saving the BEST for LAST. This fish. Was. The. Best. Fish. We. Have. Ever. Had. Oh my, it was delightful. The batter was, the best batter we have had (except in Glen Coe in this little B&B but that's a different league/story). WOW. Crispy and gorgeous, the fish itself was amazing, no bones in it which is actually hard to find. The chips were great (C feels there could have been more but you know, whateva). Now the only downfall to this perfect meal and probably the only reason we are marking this location, food, bar down is the mushy peas. As you can see in the photo above were obviously from a tin, this was a bit of a disappointment as I/we do love some good old fashion mushy peas. They were eatable but not tasty in the slightest. The tartar sauce was nice, I feel it was maybe a bit weird that it was put onto the plate and not as a side dish as I do know a lot of people who do not like this sauce, luckily for them, we are not these people. Overall though, good food, nice people who work there and obviously a lovely location (right on the loch front and in loch Lomond of course).

Bar Gumbo, Glasgow

77 Byres Road, Glasgow G11 5HN

29th of May 2016:

We had been meaning to come to this place for a while. M has been here before and recommended it so we decided to go and we brought our cousin J.
J was hungover -as normal on a Sunday- so we felt like we would include her into our world for a day.
We walked in, of course M had been here before so we knew to just sit and not wait to be seated. The waiter was quick to come over and ask us what we were having for drinks. The place itself is very nice, southern looking place. Lovely atmosphere. The menu/choice for food was decent. C got quarter chicken, chips, veg/salad. M got chicken jambalaya (spicy rice with peppers with sour cream sauce). J got chicken burger with chips.

The chicken was AMAZING. It was fall off bone chicken and so well cooked! The salad was great to, it wasn't the normal lettuce, tomato, cucumber, etc, etc. It had all of that PLUS jalapenos, sweetcorn, red pepper, onion, red onion... it was glorious! The wedges were great also, they had a spicy batter on them which was much appreciated by me, myself and I. Now... here it comes, the best thing about this place... they have a bottle of hot sauce on the table!!! I was very, very happy/excited/surprised by this, I feel this is great customer service and also shows that you care about your spicy loving customers! Great effort Bar Gumbo, don't really have a bad word to say about you.

J (our cousin) got a spicy chicken char-burger and chips. She is not a blogger like us (not cool like us) but she advised that her meal was great, she enjoyed this very much and would definatly go back and get it again!

M had the chicken jambalaya, she has advised that she has had this before, she knew how good this was... she knew what to except... she knew what she was in for. She advised that this whole dish is beyond words, there is no words to explain the mixture of tastes in this one dish. She loved it and would most defiantly go back and get this. The rice, is spicy and the correct texture (not rock solid but not soggy) the chicken is cooked to the correct texture also, the sour cream sauce absolutely tops this off as she is not a big spice lover. There is no denying that this is M's favourite food from here. Good effort Bar Gumbo, very good effort.

MeatHook, Glasgow.

2 Partick Bridge Street, Glasgow G11 6PL

22nd May 2016:

Stumbled by this place while out hunting for food in Byres Road. Hangry (anger due to hunger), and slightly hungover we spotted the giant sign for meat- the Meathook sign is huge- and headed over. It looked decent enough, sort of like an American BBQ house. We went in- its always awkward to know whether to sit or wait to be seated- and were seated by one of the waitresses.

The menu looked cool but simple, basically burgers, ribs, hotdogs, wings and the usual other stuff. Didn't take long to decide, we had a gameplan- as always. We ordered drinks and our food, I got a blue cheese burger with sweet potato fries and C got chicken wings and fries. We also shared battered prawns- cause why not? Didn't wait that long for the food, and it looked brilliant!

Took a bite out my burger and quickly realised that there was waaaaay too much bun to burger ratio. Ragin'. However, the blue cheese was great, the burger was a wee bit overdone but tasty. I solved the bun to burger ratio catastrophe easily, just took some bun off it. Sorted. The sweet potato fries were nice, could have been a bit more crispy. All in it filled a hole and it was tasty.

C feels that when ordering wings, there should be an option to have 1 bone wings and 2 bone wings (this is not just in this establishment but in all). The wings, even though there was a few 1 bones, were nice. Not the best she has had but also not the worst. The buffalo sauce was BANGIN'. The fries however, were not to her liking, she feels these fries were soggy and not crispy- as fries/chips should be. Overall, taking into consideration that she was hangry as f**k this was a successful meal which she finished happily.

The battered shrimp- leaving the best to last- was phenomenal! The batter, was without a doubt the best in Glasgow (so far). This batter left us speechless, we didn't expect this. At all. The shrimp was big and juicy - to be fair its hard to find decent shrimp/prawns - this was very satisfying for the hungover hanger.
